Counselling Diploma Orientation Course
As admission to the Counselling Diploma is dependent upon holding the BCPC Foundation Certificate or its equivalent, we designed the Orientation Course to help external applicants' transition into the Counselling Diploma. The Orientation bridges any possible gaps, making our diploma accessible to a wider audience. Many students who enter onto the Counselling Diploma having previously done an external training, report great benefit from attending the Orientation. Please note: Individuals with no prior counselling training (or very little) should apply directly to our Foundation Certificate
Counselling Diploma Orientation Course
Admission to the Counselling Diploma is dependent upon holding the BCPC Foundation Certificate or its equivalent. Due to the demanding, in-depth nature of our training process, applicants who hold certificate level qualifications of a lesser depth (such as those consisting of around 100 hours or from organisations such as CSCT, CPCAB, or AEB) can bridge the gap by successfully completing our Counselling Diploma Orientation Course.
Following a successful interview process, individuals will be offered a definite place on the Diploma Course, subject to completing Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) procedures. The Orientation Course is exactly as it is described – a preparation for training at BCPC. It does not contain any assessment function.
Course Structure
This is a 2-day course totalling 12 hours. It takes place in the summer in time for the start of the Counselling Diploma in September.
The course is taught experientially, drawing on the moment-to-moment experience of students and tutors to encourage personal awareness and the development of interpersonal skills. This experience is underpinned with theoretical input, and in particular with Humanistic approaches such as Carl Rogers' core conditions for creating a helping relationship: empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence. Seminars are supported by handouts and core book reading. Students will also practice counselling skills with each other in small groups, with structured feedback from peers and tutors.
Students also take part in an open group which is a core element of all courses at BCPC. The three main purposes of the open group are to ensure the emotional health of the group, to nurture and encourage the self development of course members, and to learn about relational dynamics and processes.
Requirements of the course:
Engage in individual therapy or counselling - from date of acceptance onto the Diploma - weekly with a psychotherapist or counsellor on the BCPC approved lists (the cost of this is not included in course fees)
Undertake reading and preparation outside course time
Keep a learning journal
Write an essay for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) purposes
